PADDLERS ARE YOU READY? GO! DieselFish thrusts its paddles into the Bay and then rips through the water. UP! UP! UP! The San Francisco Bay Area team quickens its rate, causing the boat to surge forward. This pace is grueling, but DieselFish is prepared – the team’s members improved their cardio rates. READY AND REACH! DieselFish shifts to a steady cruising speed. This transition is difficult, but the team practiced it countless times. FINISH IT NOW! DieselFish shortens its strokes and hurtles toward the finish line.

Who are we?

Established in 1998, DieselFish is one of the most respected dragon boat teams in Northern California. As an open team with a love of food, everyone is welcome regardless of experience, fitness, or age for recreational or competitive paddling. And in 2009, we added a high school team to our growing family. Based out of the Bair Island Aquatic Center in Redwood City, we are conveniently located midway between San Francisco and San Jose with team members from all over the Bay Area. The prime location makes DieselFish an ideal dragon boat team for South Bay and Peninsula residents. Our coaches love training newcomers and teaching them and they will work with you and unlock your potential. The social aspect of the team experience is also important to us. We regularly meet up for fun events including outdoor activities like hiking, enjoy great meals at local restaurants and potlucks at our homes. To find out more about DieselFish and the exciting sport of dragon boat racing, join us for a practice today! DieselFish is also a team under the California Dragon Boat Association (which is affiliated with the US Dragon Boat Federation and the International Dragon Boat Federation).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dragon Boat?

A dragon boat is a canoe that seats 20 paddlers along with a drummer and a steersperson. These high-performance watercraft race along 500 meter courses and provide the most excitement you'll ever have on the water. During races, the boats are fitted with elaborately carved and painted dragon heads and tails in tribute to the sport's ancient roots. Dragon boat racing originated in China thousands of years ago as part of the Duanwu holiday celebration. The modern version of this wet and wild sport began in Hong Kong and the popularity of dragon boat racing has exploded, and teams have formed all over the world.

How do I give it a try?

Please email our captains at dfcaptains@gmail.com and one of the captains will be in touch with you!

What equipment do I need?

The paddles, dragon boat, and life jackets (personal floatation device aka PFD) are provided by the California Dragon Boat Association. Our coaches and paddlers will show you how to use the equipment when you come out.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You do not need to know how to swim to paddle with us. While it is very uncommon for the boat to capsize, everyone in the boat is issued a life jacket. At competitions, a safety boat is available at all times and the team steersperson is safety-certified by the California Dragon Boat Association.
