Who are we?
Established in 1998, DieselFish is one of the most respected dragon
boat teams in Northern California. As an open team with a love of food,
everyone is welcome regardless of experience, fitness, or age for
recreational or competitive paddling. And in 2009, we added a high
school team to our growing family. Based out of the Bair Island Aquatic
Center in Redwood City, we are conveniently located midway between San
Francisco and San Jose with team members from all over the Bay Area. The
prime location makes DieselFish an ideal dragon boat team for South Bay
and Peninsula residents. Our coaches love training newcomers and
teaching them and they will work with you and unlock your potential. The
social aspect of the team experience is also important to us. We
regularly meet up for fun events including outdoor activities like
hiking, enjoy great meals at local restaurants and potlucks at our

What is Dragon Boat?
A dragon boat is a canoe that seats 20 paddlers along with a drummer
and a steersperson. These high-performance watercraft race along 500
meter courses and provide the most excitement you'll ever have on the
water. During races, the boats are fitted with elaborately carved and
painted dragon heads and tails in tribute to the sport's ancient roots.
Dragon boat racing originated in China thousands of years ago as part of
the Duanwu holiday celebration. The modern version of this wet and wild
sport began in Hong Kong and the popularity of dragon boat racing has
exploded, and teams have formed all over the world.

What equipment do I need?
The paddles, dragon boat, and life jackets (personal floatation device
aka PFD) are provided by the California Dragon Boat Association. Our
coaches and paddlers will show you how to use the equipment when you
Do I need to know how to swim?
You do not need to
know how to swim to paddle with us. While it is very uncommon for the
boat to capsize, everyone in the boat is issued a life jacket. At
competitions, a safety boat is available at all times and the team
steersperson is safety-certified by the California Dragon Boat
