DieselFish is a paddling team based in the San Francisco Bay Area, our club spawned in the summer of 1998 to accomodate the growing popularity of dragon boat racing.

Dragon boating began more than 2000 years ago in China, modern/competitve dragon boating first began in Hong Kong in 1976. The popularity of the sport has since exploded, with organized competitions around the globe. In the United States alone there are approximately 100,000 dragonboat paddlers who compete in sanctioned events with major paddling centers in New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Southern California.

The goal of DieselFish is not only to compete under the auspices of the California Dragon Boat Association (CDBA), and in various other paddling sports, but also to provide community services, including teaching the community about the culture and sport of dragon boating. The CDBA was formed to cultivate dragon boating in the San Francisco Bay Area and all CDBA sanctioned races benefit Self-Help for the Elderly.

This organization was organized specifically for the following purposes:
  • To provide training to men, women, and children to compete in local and international dragon boat races.
  • To encourage, maintain and perpetuate the history, culture, and sport of dragon boating.
  • To provide an environment and team to pursue dragon boat activities.

While dragon boat is the primary focus of DieselFish, the team also has a successful outrigger crew for more experienced paddlers. Outriggers are narrow canoes with a flotation device (alma) rigged at the end of a pair of wooden spars (iako). The outrigger team logo is above to the right while the general team logo is on the left.

DieselFish paddlers are an extremely diverse group. The club member base is multi cultural, and inclusive of all age groups currently ranging from 10 to 50+ years of age.

DieselFish takes a lot of pride in being a team where all the members are eager to lend a helping hand. Whether it's stocking the dragon boat races with volunteers or helping pack food for the local food bank (in record-breaking speed), DieselFish is there.

In short, we're an extremely light-hearted bunch. We eat big, paddle strong, and laugh loud. Look for our us at dragon boat races worldwide. Or try paddling with us...
