DieselFish is a proud member of the California Dragon Boat Association, the largest dragon boat organization in the state.

WHO ARE WE? DIESELFISH! WHO ARE WE? DIESELFISH!

Established in 1998, DieselFish is one of the most respected dragon boat teams in Northern California. We've paddled away with the gold at prestigious races including the Kaiser Permanente San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival. We're not content to rest on our laurels, though. The team strives to push its limits and evolve. In 2009, we added a high school team to our growing family. More than a decade since our inception, DieselFish proudly continues to paddle long and strong in our pursuit of the perfect race.

Our home base is the Bair Island Aquatic Center in Redwood City, conveniently located midway between San Francisco and San Jose. Although our team members hail from all over the Bay Area, our prime location makes DieselFish the go-to dragon boat team for South Bay and Peninsula residents. Most other Bay Area teams are based in the distant and rough waters of San Francisco and Alameda.

DieselFish is an open team. We welcome all applicants for competitive or recreational paddling, regardless of experience-, fitness-, or age-level. Our coaches love training newcomers and teaching them the secret of the trademark DieselFish stroke. They will work with you and unlock your potential.

We care about more than just training and racing. The social aspect of the team experience is also important to us. We regularly meet up for fun events including restaurant and nightlife outings, outdoors activities, and even friendly barbeques with other local teams. Our social calendar is just as exciting as our race schedule!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A DRAGON BOAT?

A dragon boat is a canoe that seats 20 paddlers along with a drummer and a steersperson. These high-performance watercraft race along 500 meter courses and provide the most excitement you'll ever have on the water. During races, the boats are fitted with elaborately carved and painted dragon heads and tails in tribute to the sport's ancient roots.

Dragon boat racing originated in China thousands of years ago as part of the Duanwu holiday celebration. The modern version of this wet and wild sport began in Hong Kong. The popularity of dragon boat racing has exploded, and teams have formed all over the world.

HOW DO I TRY IT OUT?

Please email our captains at dfcaptains@gmail.com for information about joining the team for a free practice session or New Paddler Day.

WHAT IS A NEW PADDLER DAY?

A New Paddler Day (NPD) is a free beginner's session for groups of people that want to give dragon boat paddling a try. NPDs are fun and less intense than regular practice sessions. Please email our captains at dfcaptains@gmail.com for information about joining the team for an NPD.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

DieselFish is committed to promoting low-cost sports activities, so we offer newcomers five free practice sessions with the team.

The team's membership fees are very inexpensive compared to other sports because the coaches and officers work for free. Members receive up to six hours of water time and coaching per week, use of equipment and invitations to the team's social events.

DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SWIM?

You do not need to know how to swim to paddle with us. While it is very uncommon for the boat to capsize, everyone in the boat is issued a life jacket.
